Morgan and UMES play five sets again; Bears fall, 3-2

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Oct. 25, 2024) –The Morgan State volleyball team began the second half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) on Friday night on the road against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

For the fourth time in a row and fifth time in the last seven meetings, the Bears and Hawks managed to go the distance. UMES would take the victory 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-10) at the Hytche Athletic Center. The win was the Hawks’ sixth straight over Morgan State.

UMES improved to 9-10, 4-4 in the MEAC, while Morgan State fell to 5-17, 1-7 MEAC.

Daniela Ferreira 20 total kills and a match high Addison Metts Added 13 kills to lead Morgan State. Mya Karrick recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs, both team highs. Karrick would also hit a team-high .667 with two kills. Trinity Carruthers Added 19 assists. Madison Grace And Jada Williams each tallied nine kills. Williams also hit .643 and recorded seven digs, a match-high four service aces and a match-high four assisted blocks.

The Hawks were led by Anisa Dorlouis, who posted a double-double with 37 assists and 18 digs. Tola Maczka had 13 assists. On offense, Anjola Omolewa tallied 18 kills, Ranyla Griggs totaled 12 and Rayah Howell finished the game with 12 kills.

In set 1 a kill by Piper Newton brought Morgan to 22-21. But the Hawks scored the next three points, capped by a block from Lilliana Montes and Rayah Howell, for a 25-21 victory.

UMES held an 18-15 lead in the second set when the Bears responded with six consecutive points to make it 21-18. Morgan State extended its lead to 24-20 with an assisted block from Aubrey Wilson and Ferreira. But the Hawks scored the next two points and cut the deficit in half. Ferreira scored a kill and gave the Bears a 25-22 victory and even the score at 1-1.

In the third set, the two teams were once again neck and neck as the Hawks held an 18-16 lead following an attack error by Morgan State. The Bears responded with a 4-0 run, capped by a kill from Newton, giving the visitors a 20-18 lead. From that point on, the two traded 3-0 runs for the remainder of the set. UMES initially countered with a 3-0 run and took the lead 21:20. Morgan responded with a 3-0 run of its own to take a 23-21 lead. The Hawks then scored the next three points to take a 24-23 lead. Morgan finished the set with the final three points while Grace scored the final two points to claim a 26-24 win and take a 2-1 lead.

The Bears were down 15-10 in the fourth set when they used a 3-0 run to get within 15-13. UMES jumped out to a 4-1 lead and extended its lead to 19-14. Morgan got two points back with a kill from Ferreira and a service ace Hannah Chappelle to bring the Bears to 19-16. UMES would score six straight points to earn a 25-16 victory and tie the score at 2-2.

Set 5 was all about UMES as the hosts scored six points in a row in an 8-1 run at the start of the set. Down 12-4, Morgan State used a 6-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 14-10 before a kill from Omolewa ended the game and gave the Hawks the 15-10 set win.

Morgan State will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 27, when the Bears host Delaware State at Hill Field House at 1 p.m.
