ICYMI: The 7 biggest tech stories of the week from Apple's M4 Mac teaser to Alien Romulus' release on VHS in 2024

Things are getting spookier at TechRadar as our Halloween Week event begins, but that hasn’t deterred these major announcements from the world of tech.

Actually, far from it. After all, this was the week in which Apple introduced its superlative M4 Macs Severance pay returned to our screens (so to speak) and Alien Romulus announced a VHS release. Yes, really.

7. Alien Romulus has a Blu Ray release date…and VHS

Here’s a story from 2024 you didn’t expect: Alien Romulus comes on VHS.

This isn’t just a download code gimmick either Alien: Romulus The tape is described as a “fully functional VHS” and will be released in December with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a vintage-style protective sleeve.

There are a few important questions to answer – like how much it will cost and how many of them will be produced – but if you’ve always craved the vintage horror movie experience, it’s time to get your old VHS player to dust off (or buy). one on eBay) and pay attention Alien Romulus‘ VHS tape when released.

6. Samsung has released a new foldable device

Samsung gifted us the new Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition this week – well, those of us who live in South Korea. It comes with a handful of upgrades like a 200MP main camera, but will cost you: 2,789,600 won, to be exact (or around $2,000 / £1,550 / AU$3,000).

The base model already costs a pretty hefty $1,899.99 / £1,799 / AU$2,749, so fans were hoping Samsung would instead launch a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold Fan Edition (or FE) to go with the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE and fits his other cheaper cell phones.

However, this was shot down by Samsung itself when it announced that it had “no plans” to launch a budget Galaxy Z Fold phone, although it definitely should.

5. Garmin’s brand new Forerunners beta update is here

Owners of current Garmin Forerunner watches – specifically the Forerunner 965, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 165, Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 255 – are getting new features as part of Garmin’s public beta program. The main new abilities are related to swimming (with “improvements to support swimming training in the pool with pace warnings and critical swimming speed” and “improvements to the rest screen and warning sounds when swimming in the pool”), as well as an all-new meditation function.

Although you’ll need to sign up for the public beta to take advantage of it, Garmin’s introduction of these features as part of the public beta means it will be available to all other Forerunners in the near future. These changes make the Forerunners not only great running watches, but also great swimming watches. Ideal for triathletes and all-rounders.

4. Things got spooky as TechRadar’s Halloween week began

3. Apple has prepared to launch Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence launches next week and we can’t wait to get our hands on Apple’s AI-powered features for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Expect iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 to launch in just a few days, along with a huge AirPods Pro 2 hearing aid upgrade. The first wave of Apple Intelligence features will introduce the world to what Apple calls “AI for the rest of us,” and will bring with it writing tools, photo editing via Cleanup, notification summaries and a Siri redesign.

We’ve been using the iOS 18.1 beta for a few months now and can’t wait to see what the public’s perception of Apple AI is when it officially launches. However, if you’re waiting for image creation tools like Genmoji and Image Playground, you’ll have to be patient – they won’t be available until later this year with iOS 18.2. Let’s hope iOS 18.1 has enough meat on its bones to keep you busy until then.

2. Severance Season 2 has got its first trailer

It was an agonizing wait, but we were finally treated to the first official footage Severance pay Season 2. Just 24 hours after Apple invited us all to a big event Severance pay-themed meeting, the tech giant unveiled the first teaser for the second season of Severance. Suffice it to say, the second season of the Apple TV Plus sci-fi thriller series looks to be just as strange, crazy and wild as its predecessor, War. We say it will start on January 17, 2025. Then the highly rated show will make its long-awaited return.

1. Apple told us to bring our calendars “to the Mac.”

We expected Apple to launch M4 Macs this month, and right at the time of the announcement, Apple seems ready to do just that. In a teaser, Greg Joswiak – Apple’s SVP of Marketing – all but confirmed that new Macs are coming to market, with a social media post instructing us to “Mac your calendars!” as Apple starts Monday has an “exciting week full of announcements” ahead.

We expect this to mean new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, a redesigned Mac mini and an update to the iMac, all with M4 Apple silicon. The glowing apple image that Joswiak shared reminds us of the look of Siri with Apple Intelligence, so we can apparently also look forward to the long-awaited iOS 18.1 update and Mac OS Sequoia 15.1 with this feature, which are also releasing next week.

Additionally, new Magic accessories (keyboard and mouse) will likely be released, and perhaps we’ll get an update or two for some more Apple TV shows. Check back next week to see everything that was announced.
