The Vicksburg Fire Department had to fight more than just one fire at a home at 506 Speed Street on Friday evening.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said that while firefighters were working to put out the fire, a dog bit two people in the nearby crowd.

“While emergency responders were diligently coiling the hoses and attaching them back to the truck, a sudden commotion occurred when a dog, seemingly frightened, pounced on the crowd and bit two unsuspecting passersby,” Stamps said, adding that both individuals were treated at the scene were taken to an ambulance and did not require transport for further medical care.

As for the fire itself, Stamps said crews got the fire under control in a short period of time.

“At approximately 5:37 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received a call regarding a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were greeted by a thick cloud of smoke billowing from all corners of the home, casting an ominous shadow over the scene,” Stamps said. “Determined to tackle the fire, crews quickly launched an interior attack and navigated through the haze to locate the origin of the fire. As they moved deeper into the home, they discovered that the rear floor was badly damaged, burned through and posing a life-threatening hazard. Firefighters fought the flames with tireless efforts and their determination was evident as they fought to bring the situation under control.”

Despite the quick response, Stamps said the damage was extensive and not just limited to the home of origin.

“Despite our best efforts, the damage spread to the neighboring building,” he said. “But fortunately no injuries were reported for either property. The teamwork and dedication of the firefighters were instrumental in preventing greater damage and protecting the community.”

Stamps said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
