Investigation confirms a data breach at Floyd County Public Schools

Investigation confirms a data breach at Floyd County Public Schools

FLOYD COUNTY Va. (WDBJ) – Floyd County Public Schools reports the district was affected by a cybersecurity breach.

WDBJ7 first reported on the cybersecurity issue in September after we received a tip from a concerned parent. This prompted our Target 7 team to contact Superintendent Jessica Cromer, who confirmed an investigation was underway.

Cromer said the school district is working with law enforcement agencies, including the Virginia State Police Cyber Fusion Center and the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Division in Richmond, to determine the extent of the problem.

We now know that the school district, like many schools across the country, has been the victim of a data breach.

Cromer told WDBJ7 in an email Friday that some personal information may have been compromised and accessible to the cybercriminals. This could include information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers and medical information, according to a notice on the district website.

Floyd County Public Schools is offering families free credit monitoring and identity restoration services from Kroll.

FCPS said it received a tip about the suspicious activity from law enforcement back in August. Because of the quick response, school officials reported that their systems were quickly secured.

Cromer told WDBJ7 at this time that they have no reason to believe anyone’s personal information will be used maliciously, but they are providing these free resources to reassure families.
