Local fire departments are joining forces to host a hands-on recruiting event

Have you ever been curious about what it’s like to be a firefighter?

On Saturday, November 2nd, Cook County individuals will have the opportunity to dress in firefighter gear and experience firefighting simulations firsthand.

Cook County’s nine fire departments are joining forces to host an information and recruitment event at the Grand Marais Fire Hall to encourage more volunteers to join the fire departments.

“We never have enough,” said Hovland Fire Chief Terry Spieker. “We could always use more people.”

Spieker said fire departments will have turnout gear and air cushions available for the public to try on. The event also includes a propane combustion simulation so individuals can experience what it’s like to put out a fire with a hose.

“I think we’ll do a small search and rescue event so you can experience what it’s like to crawl into a dark building and look for things,” Spieker said.

Vehicle extrication simulations will also be carried out as part of the information and recruitment event. The event will take place at the Grand Marais Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m

WTIP spoke with the Hovland Fire Chief about the upcoming recruiting event. Audio of the interview is below.
