The Lewes Fire Department is hosting an open house

Children were able to climb on fire trucks, experience what firefighters see in a burning building and use a hose to fight a simulated fire.

These activities were all part of the Lewes Fire Department’s fifth annual open house. The event took place on October 17th at Station 2 on Janice Road.

“We open our doors to everyone so people can come and see what we do,” said firefighter Robbie Stephens, one of the organizers. “This is your money – you’re sponsoring us – so you should have a chance to see our equipment.”

Paramedics paraded one of the department’s six ambulances. Beebe Healthcare volunteers demonstrated CPR. Sparky the fire dog mingled with families to teach children about fire safety.

Officers from the Lewes Police Department were also on hand to demonstrate their vehicles and equipment.

The Lewes Fire Department is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is not part of the Lewes City Council. It relies on donations and grants to cover its $4 million annual budget.

The department recently launched a fundraising campaign aimed at corporate sponsors.
