Matchday notes

While top seed Springdale celebrated its victory in the first round, the rest of the field fought three exciting duels on Tuesday, including two penalty shootouts and another golden goal in overtime.

The WPIAL Football Committee awarded the top four seeds in order of section title winners, including: Springdale (13-1), Bentworth (15-1), Seton LaSalle (12-2-2) and Eden Christian (8-7-1) . .

Eden Christian was the only one of the top four seeds to exit in the first round, while No. 13 seed Aquinas snatched a penalty shootout win to advance.

Last year’s finalists, Freedom and Riverview, are lurking in the middle this season with relatively younger teams – and both have survived the challenges of the first round.

Freedom’s title defense will be tested when they take on No. 1 Springdale, with Bri Ross (who leads all scorers in 1A with 31 goals, putting her career total over 100) and Molly Hurley, the most dangerous Double victory in the rankings.

Bentworth has just one loss, on September 18 against group rivals Chartiers-Houston. Head coach Tyler Hamstra’s teams always compete fiercely and this year was no exception with a star-studded roster. Hamstra told Pittsburgh Soccer Now that his team really took big steps in the second half of the season and that his team found an identity.

The Cats were tested in the first round when OLSH took them the distance in a match decided by another shootout.

Now Bentworth faces a Winchester Thurston side who had little trouble beating Bentworth’s rivals Chartiers-Houston 4-0 in the first round.

Seton LaSalle is a hot team – it has won 10 of its last 11 games down the stretch, including a 2-0 first-round playoff victory over Ellis School. Now the rebels face Riverview.

Sewickley Academy, which finished second to the Rebels in the same category, extended its winning streak to six games with a 2-0 win over Riverside in the first round and will now face upstart Aquinas Academy.
