The West Hartford Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire in the kitchen of a single-family home on Lawler Road at 9:19 p.m. Friday evening. When they got there, they found a resident who had partially extinguished the fire himself, but had sustained severe burns in the process.

According to Deputy Chief Jarrad Smith, the remaining fire was quickly extinguished by fire department personnel, who also completely sanitized the area to ensure there was no longer any hidden fire.

While one occupant was able to partially extinguish the fire before emergency services arrived, he suffered severe burns to his hand. The victim was treated at the scene by fire department paramedics and American Medical Response EMS personnel before being taken to Hartford Hospital, Smith said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.

While units were on scene, West Hartford police kept the area closed to traffic, but the road was open Saturday morning, Smith said.
