The WPIAL (PIAA District 7) football playoffs continue Saturday with the boys 4A and girls 2A/1A teams in action.

Here’s our thread for GIRLS CLASS 2A, as the intensity and level of play should only increase as the stakes get higher across the four games.

In the first round, the results were clear across Class 2A on Tuesday, although some teams were tested, notably No. 3 Beaver Area by last year’s runner-up, Shady Side Academy, but the Bobcats found an overtime game-winner in the first period.

There will also officially be a new champion and runner-up this season, as both Avonworth and Shady Side Academy have been eliminated. It was a very impressive three year reign for Avonworth.

beaver now has to compete against the youngest former section rival, Northern Catholicthe last school to win a WPIAL Girls Class 2A title is not Avonworth. The Trojans (14-3) advanced with a 3-0 win over Yough.

With Beaver and Quaker Valley placing high, the WPIAL committee clearly valued this section. Quaker Valley had no great difficulty defeating Southmoreland, but now faces a tough test Deer lakeswho beat Avonworth 1-0.

Still, this could be the year that happens Mt. Pleasant and head coach Rich Garland put it all together. The Vikings continued their undefeated campaign against 2A competition, defeating McGuffey 8-0. Mt. Pleasant had suffered just one loss all season against Class 4A Penn-Trafford. The Vikings’ goal difference is currently +94 this season, so they have been pretty dominant. Expect things to get tougher for Mt. Pleasant when they face each other Burrell on Saturday. The Bucs (12-5-1) fought hard for the section title this year in a good battle with Freeport and North Catholic. Coming out of the section and in the first round, the Keystone Oaks completely dominated 6-0.

No. 4 seeds South Park They also remained undefeated in Section 1, but as always, stepped out of their comfort zone and once again played against tough competition, including losses in close games to Beaver Area, Mt. Pleasant, Burrell and non-WPIAL Erie McDowell in their season opener. If anything, the Eagles are battle tested and will be a very tough opponent. Now the Eagles face the Section 2 champions, Freeport (12-1-1), it looks like it will be a 4-on-5 seeding game. The Jackets beat Belle Vernon 8-0 in the first round, as it appears the committee may have underestimated how good the teams in Section 2 have been this season.
