Proposed toll ban on unpaid drivers sparks debate over New York Thruway

New York state’s efforts to collect overdue highway tolls are intensifying, with a new proposal to ban vehicles from the highway because of unpaid tolls.

The plan would allow the Thruway Authority to temporarily or permanently remove non-compliant vehicles from the nearly 570 miles of roadway.

Reactions from expressway travelers were mixed: some advocated for accountability in tolling, others questioned the fairness and enforcement of the regulation.

The initiative aims to address nearly $276 million in debt, much of which comes from out-of-state drivers.
