Oklahoma’s QB situation becomes murkier as the Sooners struggle to score

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Oklahoma’s volatile quarterback situation just got a lot more complicated.

Michael Hawkins Jr., the true freshman who replaced the highly touted Jackson Arnold earlier this season, was substituted Saturday after committing three early turnovers in the Sooners’ 35-9 loss to South Carolina. This move by Oklahoma coach Brent Venables resulted in Arnold having a redshirt year.

Hawkins turned the ball over on three of his nine plays before being substituted. Arnold, who hadn’t played since a loss to Tennessee on Sept. 21, led the Sooners to their only touchdown on Saturday.

Venables isn’t sure who will be at No. 1 next Saturday. 18 Ole Miss will give the signal.

“We’ll talk about it when we figure out what happens next, but again, three drives in a row, turnovers – that’s a pretty easy decision (regarding Hawkins),” Venables said.

Venables said earlier this week that the possibility of Arnold redshirting had been discussed. Still, the five-star recruit, who opened the season as a starter, remained ready to play.

“I told Coach V that I don’t want to take pointless snaps and burn a redshirt if it continues like this if it would be better for me to keep it,” Arnold said. “But I also told him that if I had to come in and win a game, that’s what I would do. I invested so much in the team and still wanted to be there for them.”

Arnold said being benched was hard to bear, calling the aftermath the “hardest weeks of my life.”

“There were a lot of high, maybe even unrealistic expectations placed on me, and that really weighed on me,” he said. “At the same time, I don’t want to use that as an excuse. I’m honestly grateful that I can take a step back and look at things from a different perspective now.”

He felt like he would get a chance to redeem himself – an opportunity that came sooner than expected.

Hawkins threw an interception on Oklahoma’s first offensive play against South Carolina and the Gamecocks scored a touchdown on the winning possession. On Oklahoma’s next possession, Hawkins fumbled while being sacked by Demetrius Knight Jr., and Tonka Hemingway returned the ball 64 yards for a touchdown.

On Oklahoma’s third possession, Hawkins was hit on his throw, and Nick Emmanwori intercepted the errant throw and returned it 65 yards, making the score 21-0 just over five minutes into the game.

It wasn’t all the quarterbacks’ fault. They were sacked nine times by nine different South Carolina players, another example of the poor protection that has plagued the Sooners all year.

Under constant pressure, Arnold completed one pass for 225 yards and a touchdown against South Carolina.

“There were some that were good and some that weren’t good, but he did a lot of good today,” Venables said. “We have to be good around him.”

Arnold was booed by the home crowd before being substituted against Tennessee. The crowd cheered loudly as he replaced Hawkins.

“Honestly, in some ways I felt a lot freer,” Arnold said. “I have nothing to lose. Just went out there and had fun with it.”
