Suspect arrested in Louisiana football game shooting

An arrest has been made in connection with the murder, which occurred Friday evening before the St. Martinville vs. Erath High School football game in St. Martinville.

According to St. Martinville police, they have arrested 22-year-old Zackyric Gardner and charged him with second-degree murder.

St. Martinville police said Gardner’s vehicle was located and stopped in Texas, where he was a passenger.

He was arrested and taken back to St. Martin Parish where he was jailed. His bail was set at $10 million.

According to St. Martinville Police: “The amount of his bail is an example of a city and community that will no longer tolerate this type of violence, especially at a school event!”

Authorities have released very little information about the shooting before Friday night’s home game. All we know at this point is that there was a shooting somewhere near the stadium before the game started and one person was killed.

The following Facebook Live video recorded by Charlotte Goutierrez shows the Erath team on the field preparing for the game when several shots were fired and everyone quickly fled the stadium.

St. Martinville police are asking anyone with information, including cell phone video of the incident, to contact their department’s investigators at 337-394-3001.

They also want to remind the public that the arrested suspect is innocent until proven guilty.
