Diego Schwartzman confirms the real reason he is retiring from tennis in 2025

Diego Schwartzman has explained why he decided to retire from tennis.

In February 2025, the 32-year-old will end his professional career in front of his home fans in Argentina.

Next season will mark 15 years since Schwartzman first came to the ATP Tour and he was a very consistent player who moved very well on the court, especially on clay.

But as his ranking began to decline and entered his thirties, Schwartzman decided to end an impressive career.

Why did Diego Schwartzman decide to retire from tennis?

Schwartzman has been a popular part of the ATP Tour for many years, following in the footsteps of his compatriot Juan Martin del Potro. He established himself as a top 10 player and was a constant threat to the game’s top players for several years.

But the grueling schedule began to take its toll on Schwartzman, and as he felt his physical and mental strength waning in 2022, he began to think about life after tennis.

“I think I’m a South American player. It is very difficult to stay at the highest level, as I tried to do for many years. We’re so far away from the tour,” Schwartzman told the Nothing Major podcast.

“If you’ve had the few tournaments on clay, what happens is that the US boys always try not to play against Monte Carlo or Rome. For us it’s like that all year round. When you’re 31, 32, it becomes difficult.

“I did a lot of good things, but a few years ago, in 2022, when I felt like I wasn’t at my best and mentally, my legs and my mind were struggling, I thought I wanted a few more days stay with my family and once my people.

“After that it was very difficult to continue the tour. I thought maybe it was time to think about what to do next after tennis.”

Diego Schwartzman has no regrets about his decision to retire in 2025

Schwartzman has won four titles throughout his tennis career and will look to add one more to his tally before hanging up his racket.

He was one of the top 10 players, took part in the ATP Finals in 2020 and has already reached a Grand Slam semi-final.

He reached the quarterfinals of the 2020 French Open, where he was beaten by eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Schwartzman also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open twice.

The Argentine has certainly made the most of his career and has no regrets about his decision to retire in 2025. “I decide to quit,” he said via the ATP website back in August.

“I’m very happy with that. No injury, nothing. Okay, I decided to do this because I’m tired, because I feel like I can’t be the competitor I was before. And for me it’s great.

“Now I’m in the main draw at the last Grand Slam, after three qualifying matches that I lost at the Grand Slams this year, it’s good.”
