Lakeville South wins against Wayzata in Class 6A high school football game

Lakeville South wins against Wayzata in Class 6A high school football game

Friday night was exactly what the Lakeville South football players were hoping for. Coach Ben Burk too, but for a different reason.

After a slow start to the season that began with a narrow loss at Wayzata, the Cougars were hoping to get another shot at the Trojans in the Class 6A playoffs.

They got their wish and didn’t miss it, using big plays and long runs to cruise past Wayzata, 41-21, at Lakeville South High School.

“The players have talked a lot about wanting another chance at Wayzata,” Burk said. “We kept telling them that maybe they would get their chance. We just had to focus on one game at a time and keep improving.”

The way Lakeville South’s season started – they lost three of their first four games – Burk and his staff were made aware of it in their instructions. “Keep working hard,” they said. Keep getting better.

The Cougars listened and finished the regular season with four straight wins.

They also drew Wayzata in the first round, the matchup they wanted.

Wayzata struck first Friday, taking a 7-0 lead on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Berkland to Tony Ley before the game was two minutes old.
