Mother dead, two sons injured in shooting in southeast Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A mother is dead and her two sons are injured after a shooting in southeast Grand Rapids Thursday evening.

The shooting occurred in the 900 block of Pastiche Drive – northeast of 36thTh Street and Eastern Avenue – according to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) before 7 p.m.

We’re told the mother – a woman in her 50s – was pronounced dead after officers arrived. Her adult sons were taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

“I’m thinking now about these two young men who will hopefully be released from the hospital soon, but are going home, not to fully recover, but to go home to bury their mother,” Winstrom says.

One of the sons has now been brought into good condition.

The investigation is still early, but Chief Eric Winstrom said neighbors reported an altercation occurred nearby. He also says there were a lot of shell casings at the scene when he arrived. There could have been more than one weapon involved.

“I believe that these individuals were targeted and that they were known to the perpetrator in this case,” Winstrom added. “It sounds like if we have the full story, there’s no reason why it should have ended with gunshots, let alone a murder and the shooting of multiple people.”

While no one has been arrested, the public is not believed to be in danger.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Anyone with knowledge of the incident is asked to contact investigators at 616-456-3380 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.

Thursday night’s incident marks the city’s 12th homicide in 2024. That number is down from previous years, but Chief Winstrom says 12 is still too many.
