Indie game developer Freehold Games and publisher Kitfox Games are finally ready to donate Caves of Qud an official release date for the full game. The last we really heard about it was last year when Kitfox announced they had taken over publishing duties. This seems to be on par as the game has been in development for 15 years, including nine years in early access. But now we know that version 1.0 will finally see the light of day on December 5, 2024.

Caves of Qud

Caves of Qud is a roguelike science fantasy epic full of retrofuturism, deep simulation, and a variety of sentient plants. Enter a living, breathing world and carve through the layers of millennia-old civilizations. Decide: Is the Earth dying or about to be reborn? Do anything and everything. Caves of Qud is a deeply simulated, biologically diverse and richly cultivated world.

  • Deep physical simulation — Don’t you like it when the wall blocks your way? Dig through it with a pickaxe, eat through it with your noxious gas mutation, or melt it into lava. Yes, every wall has a melting point.
  • Fully simulated creatures — Every monster and NPC is as fully simulated as the player. This means they have levels, skills, equipment, faction affiliation and body parts. So if you have a mutation that allows you to psionically dominate a spider, for example, you can roam the world as a spider, laying webs and eating things.
  • Dynamic faction system — Track allegiance to over 70 factions: monkeys, crabs, trees, robots and highly entropic creatures, to name a few.
  • Rich science fantasy setting — More than fifteen years of world-building have resulted in a rich, strange, labyrinthine and unique story world that sits above simulation for you to explore. Live and drink, friend.
  • Tactical gameplay — Turn-based sandbox exploration and combat offers as many solutions as you and your mutations, implants, artifacts and abilities are creative enough to invent.
  • RPG elements – Quests, NPCs, Villages, Historical Sites; some dynamic and some handwritten, woven together to create a transporting RPG experience.
  • Atmospheric original soundtrack — Over two hours of music from another world that you can immerse yourself in.
