Chicago police shoot suspect who fired at officers, hitting ambulance

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago police have shot and critically injured a man who allegedly fired at police officers on the city’s North Side Saturday morning.

According to Chicago police, police were called to the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue around 9:36 a.m. for a report that a person had been shot.

While officers were on scene, the suspected shooter fired at police officers and hit a Chicago Fire Department ambulance. The suspect shot several times at officers, police said.

The officers returned fire and struck the man. They rendered aid and he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Police later learned that the suspect was a 39-year-old man.

No Chicago police officers or firefighters were injured in the incident.

Police recovered a weapon at the scene.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it was investigating the shooting. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
