(AP) – Former Vice President Mike Pence congratulated Donald Trump on winning his second term, writing another unpleasant chapter in the relationship between the president-elect and his former vice president.

“The American people have spoken and Karen and I extend our sincere congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump and his family on his election as the 47th President of the United States,” Pence wrote on behalf of him and his wife.

The former vice president also congratulated Ohio Senator JD Vance, who ran as Trump’s vice presidential running mate instead of Pence.

“We will continue to pray for all figures in authority and call on every American to join us in praying for our new president, vice president and elected officials at all levels,” Pence concluded.

Pence’s relationship with Trump fell apart after the former vice president refused to follow the Republican president’s wishes and certify the 2020 election.

Trump did not hold back in his disdain for Pence, questioning his judgment and calling him “delusional” during the campaign. Pence, in turn, declined to support his former vice president.
