Spain was shaken only a few hours after the country was destroyed by falling floods and heavy rain, by an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude.

The earthquake met southern Spain, including the popular tourist hotspots Costa del Sol and Alicante early Monday morning.

Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded the quake in front of Cabo de Gata on the Almeria coast at 7.13 a.m. Cabo de Gata is the largest protected coastal area in the Andalusia region.

With its maximum intensity, the earthquake in the European macrosesmik scale, which according to IGN has nine levels, reached IV-V or moderately to strong.

So far, eighteen aftershocks have been recorded, whereby, according to the latest IGN report, only five minutes after the earthquake in the amount of 3.4 in size measures and only occurred five minutes after the earthquake.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of almost two miles below sea level about 19 miles off the coast and was felt in hundreds of cities and villages in Andalusia and in the Levante region of the country, according to the IGN and the local media.

An airport worker told the local media: “We heard some noises one after the other, and then a loud bang and a large cloud of dust appeared.

“It was a real fear for us. There were airport workers with their first coffee of the day, but luckily nobody was injured.”

The Spanish newspaper El País reported that Granada, Malaga and Jaen were among the hardest areas together with Murcia, Alicante and Albacete in the east.

The quake came only one day after heavy rain brought chaos on streets, companies and vacation plans in large parts of the northeast of Spain.

The Spanish weather forecast Aemet published serious storm warnings for Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza, Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona as well as Castellón.

According to Aemet on Saturday in Barcelona, at least 155 mm rain fell in just two or three hours. 97 mm of rain was found in Navarra. Heavy rain was also recorded in Zaragoza and Girona.

Film material showed vehicles that are trapped under cloudy water, with some vehicles being swept away by rivers that flow along the streets.

A video captured cars that drift along the swollen El Cardener River after it burst its banks, while others were seen completely.

Rosa Montserrat Fonoll, Mayor of Kubellen, said: “I've never seen anything like this in Cubella.” She added that 200 cubic meters flowed through the city per second.
