NYC -U -Ubahn -Flood: Water falls on the train, MTA CEO and chairman Janno dear answer

New York City (WABC) – The shocking video showed how water stormed into the U -Bahn system in Manhattan during the Rainway system on Monday evening.

Video, which was recorded by an eyewitness in the 23rd Street and 28th Street on the Zuglinie No. 1, showed that the water even stormed into the U -Bahn car when the drivers were on seats to avoid the water.

The video covered by an eyewitness, which fluctuated through the entrance and the platform of the U -Bahn station No. 1 in the 23rd Street.

“What happened last night is something that is a reality for our system that the rainwater system is beating when you go north, in an hour in an hour in an hour and three quarters in one hour, the rainwater system supports and overwhelmed and tunnels in the wards,” said MTA-CEO and chairman Janno Lieber.

Dear, said it was a symptom for an extreme amount of rain in a short time and the need for an increased capacity in the city's sewage and storm drainage systems.

“In some cases, the man hole has actually planned, actually the sewage geyser you see, there is actually a situation in which the backup from the sewage system has popped the manloch and she received this geyser state,” he said. “So we worked with the city of New York to get it to increase the capacity of the system at important locations. It was particularly bad last night on the west side.”

Janno Lieber spoke with Eyewitness News about how the MTA is working on keeping the U -Bahns in motion despite extreme weather.

The drivers were amazed at the water, but apparently took the floods in step. In fact, the system prefers to treat the storm well.

“We only lost the service on the west side for about an hour and a half, we had delays, due to signal problems we had some major switching due to the loss of the route, but the system was pretty good at around 11 a.m.,” he said.

It was better to add that the service was normal again for Tuesday morning, not only on the subway, but also for lirr and metro-north customers.

He wrote down the hard overnight stay of the MTA employees for running the city transit system.

Officials say that the rain on Monday evening was the second highest rainfall, which was ever recorded in Central Park in more than 2 inches and was only exceeded by the remains of Hurricane Ida in 2021.

The city's Department of Environmental Protection has invested significantly in maintaining the system, but the expansion of the sewage capacity will not take place overnight.

“The reality is that we will do as much work as possible, but number one that we cannot protect against absolutely everything, and this is a long -term project – there is no way around,” said Dep Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala.
