Island Vulcano Eruption Live: The huge fire wall extends to the north, while gas cloud leads towards the airport

Island Vulcano Eruption Live: The huge fire wall extends to the north, while gas cloud leads towards the airport

This is the 12th outbreak in the region since 2021

The latest eruption is part of a more comprehensive pattern of seismic activity, which rejected the Reykjanes peninsula in 2021 after centuries of rest. Since then, the area has repeated volcanic events, with the outbreaks of fissures now becoming a nearby phenomenon.

Experts say Iceland is now in a new volcly cycle. Magma is expected to appear in the region for years or even decades.

If you only come to us: Iseland Vulcano cut again

– Yesterday an Iceland volcano broke out and the volcanic fissure has been expanded today – the farthest to north has been north since 2023.

– The authorities decided to evacuate the nearby city, with the police said that it was smooth.

– The Reykjanes Peninsula has exposed a number of volcanic outbreaks since 2021 when geological systems were reactivated for 800 years.

The lava flow continues, but has decreased the intensity, says IMO

Iceland's Sundhnúkur crater continued this morning, although officials say that there is a slowdown in both lava flows and in earthquakes.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said that the main fissure, which was opened by Stóra Skógfell yesterday morning, extended and extends further north than since the end of 2023.

Lava mainly accumulates in the east, spreads out in low -lying areas and, depending on the latest satellite images, covers about 3.2 square kilometers.

Volcanic tremor and seismic activities have dropped significantly since the first outbreak, with only a few smaller quakes being recorded per hour.

“The outbreak has not yet been completed, but the intensity has decreased since this morning,” said the IMO in its latest update.

However, dangerous gases and forest fires remain a serious risk for communities on the Reykjanes peninsula, it said.

High sulfur dioxide concentrations are measured via the region, which extend to west on strong southeast winds. The residents in cities such as Reykjanesbær, Vogar and Sandgerði were warned to keep the windows closed, to eliminate the ventilation and to stay inside during high pollution times.

The evacuation went smoothly, says the police

Police commissioner Margret Palsdottir announced AP that the evacuation went smoothly and took about 90 minutes.

“Of course, people have different opinions about whether the evacuation is necessary, but it is a decision for which we take and take on responsibility,” she said.

The latest outbursts in Iceland

Today's outbreak near Sundhnúkur Crater is the 12th, since the volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula was resumed in 2021 and ended in the region for almost 800 years of geological silence.

  • December 2023: A strong outbreak of the fissure near Hagafell led to the first complete evacuation of Grindavík and triggered widespread soil deformation.
  • Jan 2024: Lava injured the defense, destroyed houses and killed a person together in one floor.
  • February 2024: A short but intensive outbursts cut off hot water pipelines and leads to considerable disorders in the region.
  • March to May 2024: The longest and most voluminous outbreak, 54 days lasted and produced 35 million cubic meters of lava.
  • May – June 2024: Another outbreak followed that kept the region under continuous alert.
  • November -dec 2024: Lava reached the Blue Lagoon car park during a division event, which again led to mass evacuations.

Evacuations ordered in Grindavík

The outbreak triggered fresh evacuations from the nearby city of Grindavík. However, the city has been almost empty for months.

In November 2023, the authorities initially ordered a complete evacuation of the city after seismic activities and country deformation signaled a high risk of a magma process under the region.

A breakdown in December caused structural damage to roads and buildings. Subsequent outbreaks in January and February 2024 led to further destruction, including the collapse of the houses and the death of a person due to ground cracks.

Although some residents have returned briefly in quieter periods, the area has largely not remained limited.

What is Iceland doing so volcanic?

Iceland is located directly on the middle Atlantic ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge.

This geological hotspot drives regular volcanic and seismic activity. The Reykjanes Peninsula, which now broke out again, were 800 years before they wake up again in 2021.

So far we know about the Sundhnúkur eruption in Iceland

  • A volcanic outbreak started early Wednesday near Sundhnúkur Crater on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland.
  • According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), Lava flows from a gap estimated to 700 to 1,000 meters.
  • The authorities evacuated Grindavík, the nearby Blue Lagoon Resort and the surrounding area as a security measure.
  • So far, no infrastructure has been damaged, and there is currently no threat to populated areas.
  • The outbreak did not affect the flights at Keflavík International Airport, the company lasts as usual.
  • This is the 12th outbreak in the Reykjan region since 2021, part of an extended volume cycle.
  • Experts warn that similar outbursts could continue in the region in the coming months or years.
