Cyclist Samuele Privitera, 19, dies after crash in Giro della Valle d'Aosta

The Italian cyclist Samuele Privitera died after an accident in the Giro della Valle d'Aosta.

The 19-year-old died on Wednesday, announced his cycling team Hagens Berman Jayco.

The racing organizers confirmed that the crash of Privitera took place in the first stage. After he was visited by the medical services, the organizers were brought to the Umberto Parini Hospital in Aosta, according to Privitera.

“The circumstances of the accident are still unclear and are examined by the authorities of public security,” added the organizers.

The second stage of the race on Thursday was canceled after the crash of Privitera and the race will be resumed on Friday with the third stage, before a moment of silence.

Axel Merckx, General Manager of Hagens Berman Jayco, paid the teenager on social media.

“Samuele was and will always be the life and personality of this team,” he said on Instagram. “This team has always been a small family, and moments like this are unimaginable. It was irreplaceable. His joy, his spirit, his kindness was always a bright light for the room or the race in which he was at that moment.”

The race director Filippo Borrion said about Gazzetta della Sport: “The ambulances after the procession arrived immediately, and the doctor was immediately the severity of the situation and called 118 due to revival.

“We are sad about what happened, but we believe that we did everything to ensure the security of the athletes.”

In 2024, Privitera recorded a podium finish in a stage of the Giro-Nachest Gens. This year he made his professional debut when he was selected to drive for Jayco-Alula in Settimana Integration in Coppi e Bartali and ended in the 95th place overall.

The Giro della Valle d'Aosta is the largest U23 race in Italy, which takes place after the Giro Next gen, which takes place annually in Aosta Valley in August.
