British Open round 1 ranking: Scottie Scheffler makes the late run; Rory McIlroy right with him

The last major of the golf season is in progress. Is it too early? That is the question that Jay Busbee asked at the beginning of this week, but it is still in the form of the 153rd British Open.

This year's host is Royal Portrush, the only course in all of Ireland that has ever organized the Open. Rory McIlroy immediately made this an overwhelming favorite for fans outside the ropes. The last time Portrus organized the event in 2019, McIlroy hit his first hole from the borders, which led to a four -time bogey eight and finally an early exit from the tournament before the start of the weekend.

The compatriot Shane Lowry won the tournament, so Ireland was allowed to celebrate.

Now McIlroy is back when the second favorite behind only Scottie Scheffler No. 1 in the world.

Scheffler started in the early wave and despite some early swallowing, thanks to two birdies in his last three holes. A 3-below 68 only brought him a shot by the leaders when he hit the clubhouse. But when the afternoon wave started, the group at the top rose to six.
