Joaquin Phoenix used a talk show appearance to apologize for an earlier talk show.

As a result of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday, Phoenix spoke about the famous 2009 interview, in which he was interviewed by David Letterman while he was interviewed in character from his mockmentary “I am still here”.

The appearance of Letterman was so bad that some wondered whether Phoenix had a breakdown, and it led to Phoenix later apologized for the incident, which also ended up in his film.

On Tuesday evening, the star said that he originally made the character of the previous interview and “I realized that it was only a bit silly, so I called it back and said: 'Listen, that's what I do. I come out here and do this whole thing.'”

“And I just want Dave to like me. I just want it to be really dangerous,” said Phoenix. “That was the kind of intention … I always wanted to get this reaction and see how I would react to it. So it was an advantage that nobody had it to know, unless if necessary.”

The interview was “terrible,” he said.

“It was strange because it was a success in a way, and it was just one of the worst nights of my life,” he added.

Colbert wondered if Letterman might be watching, and Phoenix noticed that he wanted to say that he wanted to say, “I'm sorry.”

“It was so uncomfortable,” said the “Joker” star. “I regret it. I will never do it again. I'm so sorry.”

Letterman withdrew from his show in 2015 and was replaced by Colbert. Phoenix is currently playing in the film “Eddington”.
