Malala day 2025: history and meaning

The Malala Day will be observed on July 12th and the birthday of Malala Yousafzai, the latest Nobel Peace Prize winner and a global symbol of the courage and attorney for the formation of girls. The United Nations officially explained this day in 2013 to honor their bravery and to strengthen the message that education is a fundamental right, no privilege.

Malala was born on July 12, 1997 in the Mingora Pakistan region. When she returned from school on a bus in 2012, she was shot by the Taliban in an assassination attempt that also injured two of her classmates.

The attack was a direct reaction to their pronounced activism for the right of girls to education in a region in which the Taliban resisted. She suffered a gunshot wound on the head and remained unconscious for several days.

After first treatment at the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, she was transferred to Great Britain for further medical care and rehabilitation.

Instead of being silenced, the attack increased the determination of Malala. She continued her global campaign for education and became a strong voice for millions of girls who denied access to school.

In 2014 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17 and became the youngest Nobel laureate in history, the second Pakistanian and the first Paschtun who received the honor.
