Yellowstone black bear 'fatally removed' after becoming a threat to camper

An adult female black bear was “fatally removed” from the Yellowstone National Park after being conditioned on human food sources at a campsite in the hinterland.

In a press release, the park said that the bear destroyed an vacant tent on a campsite in the drainage Black Tail Deer Creek on June 7. Weeks later, the bear climbed to a bar to gain access to food that was stored by campers at the same location. The bear was killed on July 11th.

Kerry Gunther, Yellowstone Bear Management Biologist: “Although it is unusual for bears in Yellowstone to maintain human food, bears can quickly be conditioned with food and can act aggressively or dangerously to humans and put people in danger.

“The escalating behavior of the bear-in-mind damage and the obtaining a significant reward of the food states are a clear threat to the safety of the visitors and a justified distance.” Under the reasons for the removal of the bear, the surprising ability was “defeating the park's backcountry storage poles in order to maintain human food.”

On social media, the park reacted to inquiries about the possible recording and resettlement of the bear as an alternative to fatal distance: “The short answer is: It does not work.

“Bears show a strong loyalty to their established home countries, in which they are familiar with the availability of seasonal food and their position in the local social hierarchy. In Yellowstone, the change in bears is not an effective long -term solution, since it is not possible to move them far enough to prevent the return to the original conflict page or not deal with similar opportunities in the relationship.” “

This was the first time that a Yellowstone black bear had been put to the “management campaign” since 2020. In this case, the bear had injured camper.
