Here is a British open story about the Associated Press:

Portrush, Northern Ireland (AP)-Sunlight stripes through a few low-hanging clouds when Padraig Harrington opened the British Open in the wind with a penetrating 3 iron. Darkness began to cover Royal Portrush almost 16 hours later on Thursday evening when the last group dropped the 18th green.

One of the longest days was also the mood of this major in the 165 years.

Five players from five countries were taken in the lead with 4 under 67, the largest logjam in this championship since 1938. There was sun and rain, a little breeze and big gusts, and the open were not even three hours old.

The only predictable part on Thursday: Scottie Scheffler directly in the mix.

And what makes up the massive amount in Royal Portrush rounds that approached six hours was that her favorite son Rory Mcilroy, Birdie, the 17th place to recover from a bad patch onto the back nine and to join the 31 players, the par.

The former US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick from England edited the notorious “Calamity Corner” Par-3 16 by breaking down for Birdie. Harris English, the unshakable American, whose long -time Caddy could not get a travel visa for Great Britain due to the prison period, which was served 20 years ago, put his short -play coach on his pocket and made seven birdies.

They were accompanied by Li Haotong from China, Christiaan Bezuidenhout from South Africa and Jacob Skov Olesen from Denmark.

A shot behind was Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, who has not finished from the top 10 in the past four months, a route that includes another major under three wins.

McIlroy made Bogey on the opening hole with an entire country behind himself, three shots were better than his start in 2019 and overcame three bogeys in a four-hole route with a key birdie in 17th place, which enabled him to stop at 70 par.

“It certainly dealt with it better than six years ago,” said Mcilroy, who only hit two fairways. “I was just happy to have a good start and bring myself to the tournament.”

Scheffler only hit three fairways in his 68 round.

It is not that Golf's best wild wild was off the tee. There was this little matter of the weather, often the greatest defense from the left golf, the occasionally rain, constant wind and rounds that lasted almost six hours.

That is why Scheffler seemed at a loss to be so much attention to his accuracy outside of the tee.

“You are the second guy who mentioned that,” said Scheffler. “I actually thought I had done it pretty well. I don't know what you see. If it rains sideways, whether you believe it or not (it is) not so easy to get the ball into the fairway.

“Really just a swing that I was not too satisfied with in the second hole,” he said. “But outside of this I had the feeling that I met a lot of good T shots, really hit the ball solidly, so definitely a good trust for the next few.”

There was also his 4-iron up to 3 foot on the 16th for Birdie, the beginning of the Birdie Birdie-Par-Finish.

But nobody could stay extremely low.

Oleses, the British amateur champion last year, was the first player to be up to a Bogey last. Bezuidenhout was the only player from the afternoon wave to join the crowd.

Fitzpatrick achieved a low point in his game on the Players Championship and seems to be on the right track again, especially with a so -called game in difficult conditions on these links. He had a draw for fourth place in the Scottish Open last week.

The chip-in was his highlight from far below the green to the right into the cup.

“Obviously a little luck,” said Fitzpatrick. “Sometimes you need that. It just came out a little harder than expected and in the perfect line.”

Li would have had the most impressive round and kept Bogeys away from his card by luring a 10-foot-saving putt to the last hole.

Another Bogey Free round belonged to the 44-year-old Justin Rose in the group at the age of 69, including 52-year-old Lee Westwood, the former open champion Brian Harman and Lucas Glover, who had taken the lead to a few Bogeys at the beginning of the nine line.

Harris went with Ramon Bescansa, a former player, occasionally Caddy and mostly known to teach putt and chipping.

Eric Larson, who has plagued for English in the past eight years, has been refused a new travel visa that is necessary for Great Britain. Among the red flags is anyone who has more than 12 months in prison. Larson served 10 years for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, a case in which friends in the middle west know that it wanted and people in South Florida who had it.

Bescansa Caddies for Abraham Ancer on Liv Golf, who did not qualify for the open. English is in a crucial section of the season when he tries to make the Ryder Cup team. The lanky Georgian doesn't bother much and he treated the disorder with ease.

The golf was pretty stable too

“I was looking forward to coming this week, and I liked it very much immediately after playing,” said English, who did not qualify for the open when it was at portrus in 2019.

It was the most difficult for everyone to stay dressed for this occasion. There was sweaters and then rain suits, and some ended their round in short -sleeved shirts. This is meant by “mixed” conditions in the forecast.

The defending champion Xander Schauffele had a mixture of birdies and bogeys that contributed to an even par 71. Shane Lowry, the last open champion at Royal Portrush in 2019, had the nerves of a person who hit the opening t-shot. He handled it beautifully, together with most other recordings in the worst weather in his 70s round.

And that could just be the beginning.

“We will get challenging conditions in the next few days,” said Lowry. “Today, for example, the 11th hole was like the worst hole to get the weather into which we got into.

Padraig Harrington, a two-time open champion, had the honor of the opening t shot for the 153rd edition of this championship. He made Birdie. And then he shot 74.
