Portrush, Northern Ireland (AP) – The British Open had a bit from everything, from sunshine to rain, a breeze to strong gusts on Thursday. And no surprise, Scottie Scheffler was never too far from the tour.

The former US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick edited the notorious “Calamity Corner” Par-3 16 by contributing to Birdie and was among three players of The Morning Wave, who recorded a hard-earned 4-below 67 value at Royal Portrus.

Rory McIlroy played in the afternoon – he made Bogey in front of a massive gallery on the opening hole, but that was still three shots better than his start in 2019 – and was among several players who took a step in one day who felt like a slog how long it took to play.

In the middle of all of this was Scheffler, the world's leading player who has not finished from the top 10 in the past four months.

He was satisfied with the work of the day of 68, although he only hit three out of 14 fairways. These statistics apparently stood up except Scheffler.

“You are the second guy who mentioned that,” said Scheffler. “I actually thought I had done it pretty well. I don't know what you see. If it rains sideways, whether you believe it or not (it is) not so easy to get the ball into the fairway.

“Really just a swing that I was not too satisfied with in the second hole,” he said. “But outside of this I had the feeling that I met a lot of good T shots, really hit the ball solidly, so definitely a good trust for the next few.”

There was also a 4-iron to 3 foot on the 16th for Birdie, the beginning of the Birdie Birdie-Par-Finish.

But nobody could stay extremely low. Jacob Skov Olesen, the British amateur champion from Denmark last year, was the first player to be up to a bogey last. He was accompanied by Li Haotong from China at 67, and then Fitzpatrick joined the group with his wonderful chip-in.

Fitzpatrick achieved a low point in his game on the Players Championship and seems to be on the right track again, especially with a so -called game in difficult conditions on these links. He had a draw for fourth place in the Scottish Open last week.

The chip-in was his highlight from far below the green to the right into the cup.

“Obviously a little luck,” said Fitzpatrick. “Sometimes you need that. It just came out a little harder than expected and in the perfect line.”

Li would have had the most impressive round and kept Bogeys away from his card by luring a 10-foot-saving putt to the last hole.

It was the most difficult for everyone to stay dressed for this occasion. There was sweaters and then rain suits, and some ended their round in short -sleeved shirts. This is meant by “mixed” conditions in the forecast.

The defending champion Xander Schauffele had a mixture of birdies and bogeys that contributed to an even par 71. Shane Lowry, the last open champion at Royal Portrush in 2019, had the nerves of a person who hit the opening t-shot. He handled it beautifully, together with most other recordings in the worst weather in his 70s round.

And that could just be the beginning.

“We will get challenging conditions in the next few days,” said Lowry. “Today, for example, the 11th hole was like the worst hole to get the weather into which we got into.

Padraig Harrington, a two-time open champion, had the honor of the opening t shot for the 153rd edition of this championship. He made Birdie. And then he shot 74.

There was a decent score. After about three hours in the opening round, almost a dozen players were at 3 undernotes when they were on the way after the last nine.

But there were difficulties that were mainly directed by the inconsistent weather. Nico Echavarria found it on the eighth hole, which was a child's play during training.

Then came the wind that blew the rain on the side, and no choice but to beat the driver to clarify thick local grass and reach the fairway.

“It was a super simple hole that the practice round,” he said, “and today it felt one of the toughest holes in the world.”
