Amy Bradley is missing: Why the case is open

More than twenty-seven years after the 23-year-old Amy Bradley was missing on March 23, 1998, the authorities still don't know why and how she disappeared on a Caribbean cruise with her family.

A new Netflix documentary, Amy Bradley is missingPresent Apparently the ongoing journey of her family is to find her. Through interviews with Amy's family members, FBI officials who are working on the case, and people who believe that they have seen Amy alive is the hope that reporting on the case on the world's greatest streaming platform will achieve someone who knows something that can help promote him.

In the film, the cruise director who worked on the ship insists that Amy fell or jumped overboard. In this case, a body was not recovered, which is a big reason why he remains open – and why people have theories that Amy still lives.

People who claim that they saw Amy

What makes the case difficult to solve is that cell phones did not exist at the time of their disappearance. The cruise ship was able to determine when Amy used her key card to enter her bedroom for the last time, but there is no way to say when or how she left the room.

In a conversation with time, the directors Ari Mark and Phil Lott informed several theories that they heard that they could still be alive: maybe she was murdered, kept on the ship and removed when the boat was set at the next station. Maybe she went off the ship and started a new life somewhere. Or maybe she will be held somewhere against her will.

In the document, a person who claims to have seen Amy says David Carmichael that he was along a beach in Curaçao when he saw a woman with a tattoo of the Tasmanian devil who was approaching him. She looked like she was saying something, but then went on with the two men who were with her. He believes that one of the men was Alastair Douglas, a bass player with whom Amy danced hours before her disappearance.

“It only only when David Carmichael reports and says that he saw Amy on a beach that the possibility that she really lives gains real momentum,” says Mark.

Other people also have demands to see Amy.

Bill Hefner, a vet, said in the film that he met a girl in a bar in Curaçao, who said her name was Amy Bradley and told him that she had jumped from a cruise ship to achieve drugs and was now held against her will.

In 2005 Judy Maurer said that she used a toilet in Barbados when they came into the bathroom. A group of men attacked a woman and told her that a deal was imminent and that she is better on time. When mason left the stand, she saw an emotional woman at the sink. When she asked the woman as she was called, the woman said she was Amy.

A big lead in the case that Amy lived on the same year. An anonymous tipper sent the Bradley family to a link to a website with sex workers for rent, and a forensic FBI analysis found that one of the women looked like Amy.

A confrontation

Shortly after Amy disappeared, one of the first people who asked the FBI was the bass player on the cruise ship Alastair Douglas. A video from the cruise ship found film material that Amy danced with him in the middle of the night, hours before she was missing.

The FBI did not find any evidence of the disappearance of Amy, and its polygraph test was not conclusive. However, his daughter Amica Douglas appears in the document and says she is not convinced that he has nothing to do with the case.

Douglas talks about red flags she saw in her father and said when he returned from the cruise ship that Amy was on, her mother found that he became more far away. Amica adds that her father had a bag full of photos of white women who were not her mother, which she thought was suspicious.

It is rare for someone who was of interest to a person who was confronted in a real crime document in real time, but that was exactly what happened when Amica called her father when she filmed her interview Amy Bradley is missing.

He sounds upset when his daughter Amy brings up and shouted: “I didn't do anything wrong. What should I do?” He explains that he only danced with Amy in the club. When asked whether he would walk with Amy on a beach in Curaçao, he said no and claimed that he was away from beaches because he didn't like her.

“We just wanted to give her the chance to confront her father what she really wanted to do,” explains Mark.

Why does Amy's family stay hopeful

Amy's family is convinced that they are still out there and they regularly update a website on which they have posted family pictures because they have noticed that an IP address from Curaçao and Barbados visits them around holidays, birthdays and anniversaries – and lives on the website for about 45 minutes. You hope that it is connected to Amy, but you don't know exactly because the FBI cannot receive any further information about the IP address, as it does not come from a US airline. “In the event that she can look at it by chance, hopefully she would know that we are still trying and still thinking about her,” says Amy's brother Brad in the document.

Amy's mother describes how she wakes up every day and “maybe today” and maybe today the day you will find Amy. And at night their parents have a special goodnight ritual in which they say: “Maybe tomorrow.” Her father Ron keeps Amy's car in the garage and still takes care of maintenance.

“We all have the gut feeling that it is out there,” says Brad. “The lack of closure or the not knowledge enables us to hope further. So I actually prefer it as the final of an answer.”

The documentary ends with a plea of her mother Iva, with tears in her eyes: “If you know something, please give us what we need, please do so for us and do so for Amy.” The last scene is a clip from a home video of a young Amy who kisses IVA on the cheek.

Mark says he hoped that the documentary will lead to an answer. “Things happen and change as a result of these shows,” he says. “If you place these secrets out there, something almost always moves forward.”
