Shane Lowry punishes at Open after the ball seems to move

Portrush, Northern Ireland Ireland Shane Lowry, was rated a two bar penalty after his second round at the open championship on Friday after the Broadcast video feed seemed to show that his ball moved slightly when he took up an exercise swing in the Rough on the 12th hole.

Lowry made the hole in front of the punishment par. The two-shot deduction led it from 1 under 69 to 1–over 71 and set it up evenly for the championship, which made the cut by a shot.

“It is obviously very disappointing,” said Lowry. “I had played very, very well today. And yes, it's difficult to take.”

The open champion of Royal Portrush 2019 said he didn't know that the ball was moving or that there was a problem until he went up the 15th Fairway, and a regulatory officer turned to him to say that his ball was moving on his second shot on the 12th.

“I asked him: 'How many pictures is it when it is?' And he said: 'two'. “Obviously I have the feeling that I am on the cut brand, which is not very nice. I have the feeling that I played perfectly on the way and then obviously waited to see.”

After a 20-minute waiting period and discussion in the goal with rules and its play partners, Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa, Lowry was created and the judgment was announced.

“I had to take it … I didn't argue my case, but I am disappointed that they no longer have a camera hinge,” said Lowry. “The one who was zoomed in slow motion – they try to tell me whether it is not moving from the naked eye, if she didn't move it, it didn't move. I told them I was definitely down to the ball when I did this exercise swing and I did not see how it was.”

Lowry added that he had the feeling of taking his exercise swing well from the ball. He also said that he had the feeling that officials had already made their decision before checking them with players after the round.

“If the ball moves, I would have called it myself. My head definitely looked at the ball and I didn't move it,” said Lowry. “The last thing I want to do is to sit there and argue and not to take the punishment and then be slaughtered on social media this evening because they are fraudulent.”

When asked about the incident after his round, Scheffler said that he had the feeling that Lowry was put in the golf ball in the golf ball in a difficult situation, and added that it was very difficult to see in the video when the ball was moving or not.

“I will not give a strong opinion in the media about whether I thought he deserves or not, but I will only say that it was a very difficult situation for him, and I thought he was doing it really well,” said Scheffler. “It is obviously very frustrating. It is frustrating for me as a competitor of him and as a player to watch him in a way because the last thing you want to be known in the golf game is someone who cheats on.”

Despite the punishment, Lowry still made the cut a shot. Now, however, he will start the weekend with 10 shots behind Scheffler instead of eight. In 2019, Lowry shot 63 at Portrus on Saturday to take control of the tournament.

“I just have to take it – it's a bad break – and continue,” said Lowry. “I just have to dust out and go out there tomorrow and try.”
