Greensboro Surgery Center publishes explanation about the death of toddler

After the death of 2-year-old Er'mias Mitchell in Greensboro, 12 investigates determined the agencies involved in his death examination. For the first time, WXII acquired statements from the state and surgical center that took the toddler to the hospital.

The family tells us that he was a healthy and happy child and traveled from Salisbury to Greensboro to have an intervention in the Valleygate Dental Surgery Center for his cavities, but something went wrong.

“We said, so where is our son?” David Mitchell, his father, said. “He had already gone into the ambulance and we said, why didn't you tell us?”

Mitchell told us that his only son was under anesthesia and stormed into the hospital because of a collapsed lung. He said the family only found it after Ems had arrived – and shouldn't drive with him in the ambulance.

Er'mias was proud and joy. His mother loved him more than life himself.

“This is her miracle baby, only, it is like life stolen from her and we don't know what to do,” said Mitchell. “Now I have so many questions that are unanswered.”

The Valleygate Dental Surgery Center was closed on Friday.

The facility sent us this long statement by CEO Virginia Jones.

“We are broken by the tragic events of yesterday in relation to one of our patients. Our thoughts are with his family and their relatives in this unimaginably difficult time. The health and well -being of every patient are our highest priority. Our employees include a number of very experienced and herbal medical aesthesien who have been certified, and caregivers. Dental health and security are of primary importance.

“Our internal surgical team is managed by a board anesthetist. This team ensures that anesthesia is always administered either by an anesthetist of the doctor or a CRNA.

“Since 2019, more than 13,000 patients have treated safely in our outpatient surgery center in Greensboro. While rare, we can appear unexpectedly under carefully controlled circumstances. We actively review yesterday's circumstances in collaboration with all relevant agencies. We continue to focus on safety, transparency, trust patients. We can. We can use the US family.”

12 Investigations discovered that the center of the North Carolina Dental board is not licensed, certified or accredited, but that the board will examine this tragedy.

Valleygate is licensed through the Ministry of Health and Human Services in North Carolina.

The state agency said that it could not comment on a potential or ongoing examination, but shared this brief explanation.

“The death of this child is tragic, and our hearts break for everyone who is affected by his death. The department takes its role in ensuring health, security and well -being of the Nordkarolin seriously. We cannot make any further comments at this point.

Er'mias' family wants someone to be held accountable.

“My heart is broken, as it doesn't come back,” said Kyra Smith, grandmother of Er'mias.

12 Investigates still works to learn the difference between accreditation with the NC DHHS and the accreditation with the North Carolina Dental or the medical board. It is unclear whether the Greensboro police will be that their investigations are not completed.

The family held a vigil for Er'mias in their house in Salisbury on Friday evening and asked those present to get dinosaurs and candles to remember him. This is the only official gofundme that the family has set up.
