Cape May County Zoo suddenly mourns the death of Gretta, Zebra – NBC10 Philadelphia

The Cape May County Zoo mourns the loss of one of her zebras.

One of the mares of the zoo, Gretta, ran on July 9, 2025 with the rest of her herd through her exhibition when she fell after she kicked her hind legs into the air.

Gretta could not get up after she fell, the officers said the zoo. The staff answered within a few minutes to help her.

Zoo employees and veterinarians took care of them and made themselves comfortable before they died later on the same day, officers said.

According to the zoo's employees, an autopsy was carried out on Gretta, and they were able to find that several vertebrae was broke and paralyzed during the fall.

“We are deeply sad about the death of Gretta, a beloved member of our zoo family, the thousands of visitors who visited you and your foals.

Gretta leaves a foal that is closely monitored by Zoo employees. The foal has acted normally.
