Highlights, lowlights from the news of the week

Highlights, lowlights from the news of the week

Punch – Did you hear from the summer in Butte County, in which it just never seemed to stay too hot for a long time?

Yes, not either – until now!

We are in the middle of an exceptionally pleasant section of the summer. In 2025 we only recorded five 100-degree days (and not a single 110 days, of which we usually get a couple). It is even more surprising that the deep stalls dive into the low 60s and even the upper 50s overnight. This is the open-window-in-night weather, a rare pleasure in this traditional hottest month of the year.

And do the following: It is not a single three -digit day in sight. Nada. In fact, our 10-day forecast shows that it will only cool down after the expected high of 97 from today. At the moment, the forecast for Monday to Saturday shows highs between 83 and 87, with over nights of 59 and 60.

What is that October?

Let us enjoy it as long as it takes. (And may it last until autumn!)

MISS – We are sorry that Wheelin with police officers calls it a day after a remarkable history of the service for our local youth.

As mentioned on the organization's Facebook page, the original idea was to combine disadvantaged children with local law enforcement authorities for a day full of fun in nature-in this case four-wheeler in jeeps. It grew around other participants of the first aiders.

We know that this was one of these cases in which everyone benefited. The children had an impression of a lifestyle that many can never shake. What is better than enjoying the mountain air in an open jeep and the best way to see nature? And for the police officers, firefighters and others who led the way, this was a day on which “the public” probably never felt better.

Special thanks go to the former Chico police chief of Mike Maloney, Officer Ryon Mitchell and everyone else who has made this special event such a special event for so long. The day is missed – but after 22 years you can bet that his spirit continues to live in the life of the thousands of young people who have participated.

Punch – In “quality of life” it is often a matter of what is going on in your community. It was a great week so that not only to expand the quality of life on site – but in many cases simply maintained.

Just a few examples:

The Chico Bike Park officially broke the ground on Wednesday.

The program for the Power Up Public Art Utility Box is a hit-sie in the entire city center and it is somehow utility boxes in striking environmental pieces.

Sycamore Pool received an urgently needed scrub on Wednesday. (Forgive us that we said that, but it doesn't remember a famous scene of “Caddyshack”?)

And with a slightly related topic, it's not great to see the goats again in action?

Paradise pays attention to ideas for his wastewater project with neighboring communities. Butte Renewable Energy plans to restart the Oroville Biofoffstoffwerk by 2029. The disc of the chico tradition hit 51 years and Chico State received an urgently needed budget aid.

And on Friday we learned that the location project authority achieved two important milestones for approval permits, which points out that the authority's goal of breaking the ground in the reservoir by the end of 2026.

That's a lot of good news.

MISS – We understand that the federal budget is too large and to be cut, but we cannot help but use the saying.

As feared, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was affected this week with a reduction of 1.1 billion US dollars, a step that will undoubtedly influence the local outlets NSPR and KZFR. Apart from the government, which does not agree to the alleged political presence of public broadcasting, we cannot see the “waste” in this service.

We also keep our breath over the fate of rural hospitals – although it is good to see the Seneca hospital in Chester.

We understand why many people are frustrated. On the other hand, it is not the right way to have a candle, dirty diapers and a note with inflammatory messages at Rep. Doug Lamalfas office as a strange protest. It was a Kook step that led to the fact that numerous members of Chico Police and Bomb Squad spent most of their afternoon after the report of a suspicious package on site.

Talk about unnecessary waste.

Hits and Misses are put together by the editorial committee.
