DC United agrees to appoint René Weiler as head coach


The Swiss manager brings international family tree and trophy experience in black and red

Washington, DC (July 16, 2025) – DC United has agreed to appoint Swiss managers René Weiler worldwide as the next head coach of the club until a US work permit takes place. Kevin Flanagan will continue his role as interim head coach until Weiler's arrival.

With over 24 years of trainer experience and six main trophies, hamlet becomes the most experienced and experienced, incoming head coach in DC United History and joins MLS as one of the most decorated arrivals in the league.

As a manager, Weiler League title has won in Belgium, Egypt and Switzerland and ended among the top three of five different domestic competitions. His curriculum vitae comprises a quarter -finals from UEFA Europa League with Anderlecht and a league title in Egypt with Al Aly, one of the most successful clubs in Africa. Weiler is known for its tactical structure, the emphasis on player development and the ability to provide results in high -pressure environments.

Weiler, 51, was born in Winterthur, Switzerland and has spent more than two decades of leading clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa. He led the RSC Anderlecht to the Belgian professional title of the Belgian professional and the quarter -finals of the Europa League. In Egypt he led Al Aly SC with a record of 21 wins, 8 draws and only 1 defeats over 30 games for the Premier League Championship 2019-20.

Most recently, Weiler as head coach and sports director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League had two -tone roles. During his two -year term (2023–2024), he helped to stabilize the club competitive and at the same time play a central role in long -term planning and youth development.

Weilers Coaching Journey also includes stints at FC Lucerne and FC Aarau in Switzerland as well as a successful magic in Germany with 1st FC Nürnberg, where he achieved second place in the 2nd Bundesliga and a place in the promotional playoffs. He also led the Kashima anthler in Japan's top flight and contributed his global experience and his adaptability in football cultures.

As a player, Weiler was a midfielder for FC Winterthur and FC Aarau in Swiss pot light. He won the Swiss National League a title from 1992 to 1993 with Aarau and earned two caps for the national team in Switzerland before moving into coaching.
