Introduce New York Mets in David Wright into the Team Hall of Fame, retirement No. 5

New York (AP) – The New York Mets recorded David Wright in their Hall of Fame and withdrawn his number 5 on Saturday – almost 21 years after his debut in the big division.

“I went straight from the airport to the baseball and could hardly wait to see which number I would be,” said Wright at a press conference on Saturday. “This spring I was 72 years old and would have been completely satisfied with 72.” But later I found that Charlie Samuels, the old device type, gave me 5 because of Brooks Robinson and George Brett. “

Wright, who debut against the Montreal Expos on July 21, 2004, seemed to be in the right way to Robinson and Brett as Hall of Fame Dritter Baseman when he was with 222 Homern, 876 RBIs and one .888 -OPS in his first 10 seasons.

But Wright only played 211 more games when he fought chronic back, shoulder and neck injuries as well as a diagnosis of a spine stenosis. He went between the Big League appearances for more than two years before completing his career with two Kameen in September 2018.

“There was nothing I could do to do the thing,” said Wright. “It took a while for my brain and heart to come together. But I think very, very, very few athletes get the end that you want -this story end. I would certainly not call myself a storybook end, but it is better than 99% of what athletes get, and I will be grateful forever.”

Wright, the youngest captain of the Mets and the only player in the team history who went to retirement after his entire career in the club, thanked during a speech that ended a half -hour ceremony from the broadcaster Howie Rose.

Wright, who emerged from the third base side of Citi Field, went to a golden third basis, stood on his pocket and blew kisses to the sold -out crowd. In a corresponding METS touch, an aircraft, which lifts off the nearby Laguardia, rose to eye level after its No. 5 was presented high above the left fields.

The 42-year-old married father of three children, who was praised for his ability to combine stars and everyday people during his career, as well as his appreciation for the history of Mets, which the lamp media relationship manager Shannon Dalton Fors and the deceased team photographer Marc Levine mentioned during his press conference.

Towards the end of his speech, he also thanked the Wilpon family, who had his entire career for the team.

“If they had told a young David Wright that he should close his eyes and imagine this day, I would have said that they were crazy, in no way, impossible,” said Wright, a native Virginia who grew up on the Mets while participating in their triple-a games in Tidewater. “And then I would have run out in my back yard in Virginia and would have hit a homemade t -shirt with balls that fell apart on the seams until it got dark to prove you properly.

“Thank you for making my dream in front of you every evening. I love you so much. Let's go METS.”

Wright is the 35th member of the Mets' Hall of Fame and the 11th individual who retires his number, and the managers Casey Stengel and Gil Hodges as well as Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza, Jerry Koosman, Keith Hernandez, Willie Mays, Darryl Strawberry and Dwight -Baseber, W whose No. 42, Wessen No. 42, desired.
