Talk sport sad to announce the death of Bob Bubka – our legendary and legendary voice of the golf

I once asked Bob why he refused to sail into the sunset and sunbathe in the glory of an extraordinary radio career.

“You could spend on the beach every day,” I told him.

Bob was the heart and the soul of Talksport's golf team

His answer was something I will never forget.

“But Sean is my beach.”

After all, it takes more than just a cool accent to become the “voice of the Gulf”.

It takes 60 years of experience. It takes a passion for the game that beats everyone else. It takes the respect of icons like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Bob golf golf her most famous voice, and in return Golf gave him a feeling for the purpose – and he devoted his life to cover it well.

Nobody knew about Golf as Bob – and with his audience, which was already fascinated by this iconic voice – he would always tell a story that was worth hearing.

The New Yorker got his first big break in 1964 and worked for WLNG radio about high school football games.

Due to his unique and committed style, Bob began to make a name for himself in the world of the golf transfer in the 1980s and fall in love with the famous Masters of 1986 in Nicklaus.

Until 1995 he delivered live updates for national sports networks and organized the legendary “Outside the Ropes” golf show for NBC Sports and the PGA Tour and quickly became one of the most famous announcers in America.

But it was in 2000 when Bob shot the superstar on these banks and took over a job that would transform him at Talksport in Radio Royalty.

Our world is about characters – figures that connect with the listener – and Bob will always be one of our greatest protagonists.

Like Alan Brazil, Bob was omnipresent at Talksport and helped transform them from modest beginnings into the largest sports station in the world.

In the past 25 years, Rupert Bell Bell Bob's partner for crimes, and there is no better person who leads them through this trip.

“Radio is about voices,” said Rupert to Talksport.com. “There is no doubt when you heard Bob Bubka speak, it just grabbed you.

“Unmistakable, iconic, paired with a wonderful, unique style. For over 25 years, his distinctive American tones and enthusiastic talk sports listeners have been inspiring.

“His love for the golf game shone through, paired with a cheeky, almost rebellious element, which not only made him happy – but in my case – to work.”

Bob was worshiped by Legends of the Game – including the two leading main winners of all time: Nicklaus and Woods.

When I met him for the first time in 2022, Bob put serious health challenges aside to travel half of the world to be in St. Andrews for the Open.

Nobody will be lost at Royal Portrush that Bob's death coincides with the greatest championship of Golf's great American Great – Scottie Scheffler.

In 2022 it was easy to understand why he moved heaven and earth one last time into the house of the golf.

“Every time I go past the sign, that is,” Welcome to St. Andrews “, there is something magical,” said Bob to Talksport.com.

“The anticipation increases. My excitement increases. My enthusiasm increases.

“I can't put a finger on it. I can't duplicate it. If I could fill and sell it in bottles, I would be a billionaire.

“It all started here. I was enough here, but every time I feel so blessed.

“I'm not here for money. I wouldn't just do it for free, I would pay for it.”

He was closely friends with Nicklaus, who invited Bob this week how he became an honorary citizen of St. Andrews.

Woods is famous for a very private person, but he greeted a member of the media on the way from a typical strict press conference this week – and it was bob.

Rupert remembers: “His talk sport began in the late nineties, which coincided with the total dominance of Tiger Woods.

“Our paths crossed a tournament in Germany for the first time in 2000, where Tiger played. Bob met Geoffrey Boykott and had no idea who he was.

“Bob was outrageous when it came to Tiger Woods – in awe of his performance – especially when he was brought up in the Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer era. It was proof of Bob that Tiger always seemed to be reached and said.

“Bob and I would see each other with two or three tournaments a year and it was never boring. His ever-loyal partner Janis had to work overtime to keep him in chess and in those early days when Bob loved a party …

“But his love for the traditions and inheritance in the Golf revealed itself more and more than the Ryder Cup, about which Bob wrote a book. The two -year tournament was incredibly important to him and he loved to fly the American flag, even in view of some catastrophic appearances.

“In later years, Bob's health made it difficult to travel and his last open in -situ was in St. Andrews in 2022.

“He loved being there – and the pleasure in which he drove his motorized wheelchair through the city was fantastic.

His death will undoubtedly trigger memories of memories from the entire golf community

“But what he also loved was the interaction with Talksport listeners – and in the end I know that it was so important for him to be part of the interlocutors when he had to fight with sick health.

“Even if this voice never stalls physically. The covering of the majors will never be the same without the delicious voice pulling us into the magnificent golf.”

I was ashamed of Bob once I told him that I grew up with him to hear on his way to school.

But it was the ultimate compliment. At that time Bob was the coolest reporter in sports, and no one had taken his crown more than two decades later.

It will always be part of what makes talk sports so special – and we won't be the same without him.

We will miss you, bob. Quiet in peace.
