It was a brutal day on the tour yesterday, where Remco Simepoel had to give up. The double Olympic champion was in the general classification rating of the third, but had lost more than six minutes against the race director Tadej Pogacar in the two previous phases.

“I haven't felt good for three days and this morning I could feel that I was empty, and then the legs weren't there,” he said.

“It's a shame that I had to retire, but it's nothing that will change my relationship with the race.”

Thymen Arensman claimed his first step on the tour, while Pogacar became second in front of Jonas Vingegaard and increased his lead to Dane slightly.
